High Grade kits have gotten dramatically better over the past five years. Modern HGUC and HG:G lineup kits rival what Master Grade kits looked like in the 2000s. These are the ones worth owning.
Best HG kits overall
HG Gundam Aerial (Witch from Mercury)
The GQuuuuuuX and Witch from Mercury HG kits represent the current state of the art in High Grade engineering. The Aerial has a distinctive silhouette, excellent color separation, and Permet Score display parts. At ¥1,870 it's the best value in the line.
HGUC RX-78-2 Gundam (Revive)
The 2015 revive of the original is still the go-to for beginners who want the classic design with modern engineering. Fully articulated, clean color separation, widely available. At ¥1,650 there's no better entry kit.
HG Forbidden Gundam (Seed)
One of the most complex HG kits ever made — the expanding wings actually open via a built-in mechanism. Distinct from the rest of the SEED line and visually dramatic on a shelf.
HG Gundam G-Self (Reconguista in G)
Often overlooked because of the anime's reception, the kit itself is exceptional. The backpack equipment packs add real display options and the proportions are outstanding for HG.
Best for beginners
Entry Grade RX-78-2
No clippers, no gates, snap-fit only. Perfect for kids or anyone who wants to understand what Gunpla is before investing in tools. Available under $10 on Amazon. Don't underestimate it — the proportions are clean and it looks great displayed.
HG Gundam Calibarn (Witch from Mercury)
The "dark Aerial" with a more aggressive design language. Same excellent modern engineering. If you love the WfM aesthetic, this is the one.

Bottom line
The WfM and IBO HG lines are the best modern HG production. If you're buying your first kit, start with the RX-78-2 EG or HGUC Revive. If you're an experienced builder looking for a quick satisfying build, anything from WfM is reliably excellent.
